The wedding cake still does a job no other table can do. It is the photograph, the first thing the couple do together, and the slice guests take home. At the Spanish City and Newcastle Racecourse wedding fairs, the cake stand we keep seeing beside us is Vanilla Teas.

Vanilla Teas is a Cullercoats cake business, run as Vanilla Teas Party Essentials. They design wedding cakes across Newcastle, Northumberland and Durham, with more than 30 flavours, tastings, and local delivery. Their flyer is the simple version: beautifully designed two-tier cakes. Ask Vanilla Teas directly for their prices.

What the cake is actually for

The custom is older than icing. In ancient Rome, guests broke a small loaf over the bride's head for good fortune. By medieval England it was a stack of sweet buns the couple tried to kiss over. Queen Victoria's white-iced cake in 1840 made the tiered cake the centre of the photographs, and it has stayed there.

  • The tiers stood for two families joined, and a life built step by step

  • White icing was once a sign the family could afford to be generous

  • The first cut is the first small job the couple do together

  • The top tier used to be saved for a christening. Many couples now keep it for the first anniversary

Why Vanilla Teas fits a North East wedding

They work from a photo or from what the couple describes, and they will talk through size so the cake matches the guest count and the budget. A tasting box lets the couple try six flavours at home. They can adapt recipes for gluten, dairy, nuts or egg, though they are clear that allergens are handled in the kitchen. A stand comes with the wedding cake. They also hire stands on their own if the couple already has a baker.

If you liked the cake on their stand at Spanish City or the racecourse, start there. Tell them the venue, the date and how many people need a slice.

Keep the cake. Add the queue.

A good cake is a centrepiece. It is not a pudding for 120 people who have already had a meal. That is the gap Candy Floss Events fills. We spin candy floss fresh, in the wedding colours, and serve warm sweet and savoury popcorn for the rest of the evening. Guests are not limited to one portion.

  • The cake stays the formal moment and the photograph

  • Candy floss and popcorn give guests something between the speeches and the dancing

  • No guest cap and no per-head charge on the night

  • We set up, serve, and clear our own station
